Norfolk Estate influence formalised
1580
The Dukes of Norfolk, based at Arundel Castle, had long held influence over the Littlehampton area, and by the late sixteenth century the Norfolk Estate was the dominant landowner in the town. The estate's control over the land shaped the development of the settlement, the harbour and the surrounding agricultural land. The Norfolk connection would continue to influence Littlehampton for centuries, with the estate playing a central role in the town's Victorian development as a seaside resort.
