First major harbour improvements

1735

The first significant programme of harbour improvement at Littlehampton was undertaken in the early eighteenth century, with the construction of training walls and channel works designed to maintain a navigable passage through the river mouth. The harbour improvements were funded by local subscription and by the Duke of Norfolk, and they reflected the growing importance of the harbour to the local economy. The works established the basic harbour infrastructure that would be maintained and developed over the following centuries.
