Seafront promenade constructed
1870s
The construction of the seafront promenade in the 1870s provided the infrastructure for seaside leisure that the new railway visitors demanded. The promenade ran along the back of East Beach, providing a level, paved walking route with views of the sea and access to the beach. The promenade established the pattern of seafront development that continues to define Littlehampton's resort character, and the basic route laid out in the Victorian period is still in use today.
