First World War impact

1914-1918

The First World War disrupted the resort trade and took many of Littlehampton's young men to the battlefields of France and Belgium. The town contributed soldiers to the Royal Sussex Regiment and other units, and the war memorial in the town records those who did not return. The harbour was used for military purposes, and the resort facilities were adapted to wartime needs. The war changed the social fabric of the town, as it did every community in England.
