Domesday Book records the Arun mouth settlement
1086
The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded the lands around the mouth of the River Arun as part of the wider manor system in Sussex. The settlement that would become Littlehampton was a small agricultural and fishing community, its harbour already in use for coastal trade. The Domesday entries for the area record land holdings, populations and the resources of the manors, providing the earliest documentary evidence for the community at the Arun mouth.
