West Beach and River Road
Wilder western beach and river bank with dunes and natural coastal character
The western side of the river, reached via the harbour footbridge or by road through Climping. West Beach is wilder and less developed than East Beach, offering shingle and sand backed by low dunes and coastal scrub. The area is popular with dog walkers, windsurfers and those seeking a quieter beach experience. River Road runs along the western bank of the Arun, providing access to the footbridge and views across the river to the harbour and the town. The West Beach car park at the end of Rope Walk is the main access point. The dune system behind the beach is ecologically valuable, and the coastal erosion challenges along this stretch are the subject of ongoing management and debate.
